The following file types are supported: mp3, m4a, wma, ogg, flac.
For m4a both AAC and lossless ALAC formats are supported.
Some variants of these files might not be currently supported. For example, wma pro and wma lossless are currently unsupported. If you think a file is missing from your account it might be because it is currently unsupported or corrupt. You may contact support to notify us of such files and we'll do our best to help you out.

Yoav (Customer) February 18, 2011 08:17Update: we've just added support for ALAC lossless audio codec. This is the codec used in lossless m4a files. Which means we now supports another variant of m4a.EditDeleteRemove

Along the same lines, I've always kept my files in lossless versions (WAV, some apple, recently FLAC); I share the computer with my teen daughters who generally buy music on itunes. Thus, the majority of music uploaded is their's. Will this be changed in the near future? Do I have to convert all the files to low bitrate to use the service for much of my music? Thanks

FLAC format will be available ASAP. -

Hi Mecanto Team. Does Mecanto support native streaming playback of FLAC files? Or does it have to "transcode" down to MP3 (like Subsonic does)? Also, does Mecanto support playback of high definition FLAC files (24-bit, 96KHz sample rates, for instance)?
If Mecanto can stream high definition FLAC files in native format, I will buy it immediately!!!-
Excellent question... but I can ́t see any answer to it...

Hi Victor, Mecanto did answer this question as "Yes!" on a different thread, called, "Can Mecanto Stream Native FLAC files?":

Yes, thanks, I have just found it 5 minutes ago ! Quick reply, by the way... congratulations for the service :-).
I am currently thinking of moving from soundcloud.com to MeCanto as soundcloud doesn ́t allow to upload my (ripped) music collection. Mmmh, I will check it again today carefully. I have a couple of questions but I want to check main questions&answers.
Again thank you for your reply. -
